Seller FAQ

Common Questions
From Card Sellers

Everything you need to know about pricing cards across every channel.

Your eBay list price needs to account for the platform fee (13.85% for Top Rated Sellers), payment processing (2.99% + $0.49), shipping, and packing materials — plus recover your cost basis and grading fees. Simply listing at market value means you lose money on every sale. The V's Cards & Trading Pricing Calculator automatically sets your eBay list price at market value plus the platform fee rate, so your net proceeds equal close to true market value after all deductions.

For trading cards on eBay in 2026: Top Rated Sellers pay a 13.85% final value fee. Standard sellers pay 15.00%. On top of that, payment processing adds 2.99% plus $0.49 per transaction. Shipping a graded slab typically runs $6–$12 depending on value — cards over $100 require added insurance through USPS. Packing materials add another $1–$4. On a $50 card those fees total roughly $17–$18, meaning you need to list at $56–$57 just to net $50.

In-store and show table pricing should be set below your online price — not above it. Your walk-in customers are doing you a favor by buying in person: no shipping, no platform fees, no returns. A good rule is to sticker cards at 8% below current market value. This gives buyers a genuine deal vs buying online, moves inventory faster at shows, and still leaves you strong margins since you are only paying a small POS processing fee (2.99% + $0.49) instead of 13–15% platform fees.

Not always — and this is where most sellers lose money. Grading only adds value when the grade achieved (PSA 9 or 10) commands a premium large enough to cover the grading fee plus the opportunity cost of waiting months for results. On a $20 raw card, a $14–$19 PSA grading fee plus a 6-month wait only makes sense if the graded version sells for $60 or more. Our calculator lets you enter the grading fee directly so you can see your real cost basis and whether the margin justifies submitting before you ever drop it in a submission.

Buy rates vary by card value and tier. A fair and sustainable buy rate for a card shop is: 80–85% of market for cards valued at $500 or more (blue chip), 70% for $100–$499, 60% for $20–$99, and 50% for cards under $20. These rates account for the shop's need to resell at market or above while covering platform fees, grading costs, and overhead. Paying above these rates on bulk lots is how shops lose money — paying below them drives sellers to other buyers.

Your listing price is what buyers see. Your net profit is what actually lands in your account after every deduction. On a $100 listing: eBay takes $13.85, payment processing takes $3.49, shipping costs $9, and packing costs $2 — leaving you with $71.66 in net proceeds. If you paid $60 for the card your net profit is $11.66, an 11.7% margin. Many sellers price at market and are surprised to find they are barely breaking even or losing money. Always calculate net profit — not gross sales — when evaluating whether a card is worth listing.

Each platform has different fee structures — what you list on eBay, a marketplace, or sell in store all require different price points to hit the same net margin. The V's Cards & Trading Retail & Vending Pricing Calculator handles all channels simultaneously. Enter your market price once and instantly see the correct list price for online Top Rated, online Standard, Marketplace A, Marketplace B, and in-store — all calculated at the same time with full fee breakdowns and margin percentages per channel.

Your break-even list price is the minimum you can charge to recover your total cost — purchase price, grading fees, shipping, and packing — after platform fees are deducted. If you list below break-even you are paying to sell the card. The calculator automatically shows your break-even floor for every channel. If current market value is below your break-even the calculator flags it immediately so you know whether to hold, relist lower and take a loss, or pull the card from inventory.

It depends entirely on the card, the expected grade, and current market premiums. PSA commands the strongest brand premium — PSA 10s typically sell 10–30% above CGC 10s for the same card. BGS is preferred by some collectors for its sub-grade system. CGC and TAG offer lower fees with faster turnarounds. Current fee ranges: PSA Bulk $14, PSA Value $19, PSA Regular $50, PSA Express $150, BGS Value $14.95, BGS Standard $25, CGC Value $17, CGC Standard $30, TAG $25. Our calculator lets you select any service, adds the fee to your cost basis, and shows you whether the resulting margin justifies the submission.

For raw non-sports cards TCGPlayer sold listings are the most reliable source. For graded cards use recent eBay sold listings, ALT, Fanatics Collect, and Goldin for high-value pieces. For sports cards check eBay sold, PWCC, and Goldin. The V's Cards & Trading calculator is source-agnostic — enter Min, Avg, Max, and Last Sale from any reference source you use. You are not locked into any single platform's data, which matters because prices vary significantly between sources depending on recency and sales volume.
